Tip 4: Keep a Clean Desk!
One of the easiest things that you can do to make work more enjoyable is to keep your desk clean. Remember this is your personal space and it is a reflection on you. Not only will keeping your desk clean give a better impression it will also give you the feeling that things are not so cluttered. It also tends to make you feel like you have accomplished more when your desk is clear than it does with a big pile of stuff on it.
The main reason that you are going to want to keep a clean desk is that it makes your more efficient at doing your work. It is hard to get your work done if you have to go digging through your messy desk every time that you need something. Keeping everything neat and organized will help to make sure that you can find what you need and you will get things done faster. The faster you get the work done the better you are going to feel about your job which is another important factor.
Keeping your desk clean will also help to keep you feeling more relaxed. It is the same reason that we keep our houses clean. Going home to a messy house upsets most people and the same is true of your desk at work. While you are working your desk is your personal space and having it messy and cluttered often leads people to feel unhappy. If you take a few minutes every day to straighten up you will find that you are much happier at work. Given the amount of time you spend at work this is a pretty important thing.
A messy desk will also send the wrong impression to your boss and your co-workers. Not only does it say that you are not very organized it tells people that you don't really care about your job. This may not be true but that is the impression that people are going to get. Obviously this is not something that you want people to think, it is really bad office politics and it is not going to help you to get ahead at work. Appearances are important you don't want to make the wrong one; it can really hurt your prospects.
While keeping a clean desk is important you really don't have to go overboard in doing so. There are some people who are absolutely obsessed in this regard; you probably don't want to become one of these people. Rather you will find that you are happier if you just make a small effort to keep your desk organized. Make sure that everything has its place and that when you are done using something that you put it back where it belongs. Taking a few minutes to tidy up on a regular basis is a lot easier than allowing a big mess to accumulate and then cleaning it up.
